Post office tour guides sought
As part of the upcoming Las Vegas Centennial, the city is looking for volunteers to serve as museum guides for the historic downtown post office.
The city is now accepting applications for volunteers interested in giving tours of the building during the months of May, June and July.
Architects, historians, artists, graduate students, educational professionals as well as experienced museum guides and those with a passion for local history are encouraged to apply.
Applications are due by Feb. 29. Those interested in becoming part of the U.S. Post Office and Courthouse Post Modern docent team and would like to receive an application form, can contact Kim Jones at the city at 229-4739 or by email at kjones@lasvegasnevada.gov.
DARE to honor Harrah's executive
The Drug Abuse Resistance Education (DARE) program will host its national gala at 6:30 p.m. Saturday at the Rio.
Tim Wilmott, chief operating officer of Harrah's Entertainment Inc., will be honored for his continued contribution to the youth in the United States.
The event will include a silent auction, dinner, dancing, entertainment and tributes to this year's honoree.
Proceeds from the event will make a significant contribution to the DARE program throughout Las Vegas and the United States.
Tickets are $500. Call 254-5704.
African American Poetry Night
will be held at 7 p.m. Friday at the West Community Center, 2050 Sapphire Stone Ave., one of many multi-generational activities and performances honoring Black History Month. Poets age 18 and older interested in performing should call 229-5096 to arrange participation. Call 229-5096.
