Christopher Ruis-Gardner, 18, of Las Vegas and John-Henry Lambin, 12, of Gardnerville were named Nevada's top two youth volunteers for 2005 by the Prudential Spirit of Community Awards, a nationwide program honoring young people for outstanding acts of volunteerism.
Ruis-Gardner was nominated by Durango High School, and Lambin was nominated by the UNR. As state honorees, each will receive $1,000, an engraved silver medallion and an all-expense-paid trip in early May to Washington, D.C., where they will join the top two honorees.
Ruiz-Gardner, a senior at Durango High School, organized a community clothing drive that collected more than 15,000 articles of winter clothing and nearly $2,500 to assist the homeless.
Lambin, a sixthgrade home-schooled student, created "Kids Extreme," a program that supports young people who have asthma and dyslexia.
