UNR sweeps road series from Rebels

Unearned runs and one costly pitch doomed UNLV baseball Sunday afternoon as the Rebels dropped a 6-4 decision to in-state rival UNR at Earl E. Wilson Stadium.

Leading 1-0 heading into the fourth inning, UNLV gave up three runs to the Wolf Pack, which didn't get a hit in the inning, but benefited from an error that allowed two runs to score. The following inning, UNLV starter Matt Luca had an 0-2 count on UNR's Jacob Butler with two on, but Luca's next pitch stayed over the heart of the plate and Butler drilled it off the scoreboard in left field for a three-run home run and a 6-1 Wolf Pack lead.

Luca was the loser for UNLV, falling to 0-2 on the year. UNR starter Ryan Rodriguez improved to 2-1 and Wesley Dorsett earned his second consecutive save and third of the season. The Rebels lost their sixth consecutive game, falling to 1-8. UNR improved to 6-3 with the sweep.

New York pitching

Thirteen IOC delegates began inspecting potential sites and facilities in New York in their tour of potential 2012 Olympic host cities. Mayor Michael Bloomberg, accompanied by U.S. Olympic Committee chairman Peter Ueberroth, shook hands with the delegates in a conference room that bore an NYC2012 logo on the floor. Each delegate carried a thick "2012" binder.

The evaluation commission is in town for a final round of scrutiny, assessing the five cities still in the running for the Olympics. The group already toured Madrid and London, with Moscow and Paris left to visit. The IOC will weigh the evaluators' findings and announce its decision July 6.

UNLV adds to streak

The 72nd-ranked UNLV men's tennis team (7-2) downed unranked Hawaii 5-2 at the Fertitta Tennix Complex to earn its seventh consecutive victory, which marks its longest winning streak in eight years. In singles play, 38th-ranked Henner Nehles won his seventh match in a row, 6-1, 6-3, against Dalibor Ptak to improve to 16-5 on the year.

Wranglers lose again

A 3-2 loss at Fresno extended the Wranglers' team-record losing streak to five games. John Wroblewski's goal 2:50 into the third period was the winner for the Falcons.

O'Brien on move

Injured American midfielder John O'Brien is leaving Ajax Amsterdam and will join ADO The Hague after his hamstring heals. O'Brien, 27, a California native, joined Ajax in 1998 after training with the club's youth program as a teen.
