Letter: Taxes must be kept reasonable
Monday, Feb. 21, 2005 | 8:54 a.m.
If Nevada has such a tremendous tax surplus, why are our property taxes on the verge of skyrocketing? How much more of a surplus will this create? When that happens, how will it be squandered? Will it go to education, or the elderly? Will our health care benefit? Not likely.
Unless property taxes are reined in, those who bought homes just a few years ago, and budgeted for taxes and other expenses, will no longer be able to afford to live here. And certainly many prospective homeowners will be priced out of the market. "Come and live in Nevada ... if you can afford to," would become our new slogan.
If Nevada is to continue to grow, and be one of the most desirable destinations to live in this country, then affordable housing has to be available. Keep taxes low and stable, and we'll see growth continue.
