Lawmaker wants casino

LINCOLN, N.H. -- New Hampshire state Rep. Edmond Gionet is betting a North Country casino can provide local jobs and stabilize his state's economy.
Gionet, a Republican from Lincoln, filed legislation that would permit the creation of a privately owned and operated White Mountain Resort & Casino. Under the plan, the state lottery commission would collect 20 percent of the proposed casino's gross profits for deposit into the state's general fund.
"We are the playground for the rest of the state, and the rest of the world," Gionet said. "And I figured we could put it in an area with ample real estate, where a private corporation could purchase the land and build a casino at no expense to the state."
Sen. John Gallus, R-Berlin, estimated a 100,000-square-foot casino would employ 2,000 people.
