Super Size’ filmmaker to speak after showing

Friday, Feb. 18, 2005 | 9:24 a.m.

UNLV students may never want to eat french fries again after they hear from Morgan Spurlock, the director, producer and star of the Oscar-nominated documentary "Super Size Me."

Spurlock will speak at 7 p.m. Tuesday lecture in the student amphitheater following a 5:30 p.m. screening of his film.

The documentary tracks the deterioration of Spurlock's health as he eats nothing but McDonald's for 30 days.

The free, student-government sponsored lecture is designed to attract health sciences and film students, but is open to the whole student body and the general public, UNLV student body president Henry Schuck said.

"Everyone eats fast food more in college than anywhere else or at any other stage in life and this (film) kind of screams at you not to do that," Schuck said.

Schuck said he rarely ever eats McDonald's food now.

"The stuff they show in the movie really makes the food look disgusting," Schuck said. "The fact that it could do that many negative things to your health just by eating a type of food is really crazy and scary at the same time."

Spurlock's $11,750 fee is being paid through student government fees established to bring in guest lecturers and through a $500 grant from the film department, Schuck said. Spurlock will be paying for any marketing costs to UNLV in promoting the event because he had to change the date because of his Oscar appearance next Sunday.
