WASHINGTON -- President Bush's top economic adviser is leaving his post to return to academia, the White House announced today.
N. Gregory Mankiw, the chairman of the president's Council of Economic Advisers, wrote Bush a letter of resignation dated Feb. 9. "It is time for me to return to my family, my students and my books," the former Harvard University professor wrote in the letter that also praised Bush's economic policies.
White House press secretary Scott McClellan would not discuss possible replacements. McClellan said Mankiw made it known when he took job that he planned to serve for two years and then return to Harvard.
