Poll finds most in favor of slot machines at tracks

LOUISVILLE, Ky. -- Fifty-six percent of Kentuckians surveyed in a new poll are in favor of allowing slot machines at racetracks, up from 49 percent last winter.

And if the state needs to raise money to balance the budget, support climbs to 61 percent, according to the Bluegrass Poll, conducted by The Courier-Journal and published today.

People who live in Louisville and surrounding counties and in northern Kentucky and the Bluegrass region showed the strongest support, the poll found. Support was below 50 percent only in western and south-central Kentucky.

The poll also found that respondents who attend religious services regularly were more likely to oppose expanded gambling in Kentucky. Fifty-six percent of those who worship weekly or almost every week said they do not favor slots at tracks.
