Supreme Court to consider gambling law challenge

Monday, Feb. 14, 2005 | 9:21 a.m.

HARRISBURG, Pa. -- The Pennsylvania Supreme Court on Friday agreed to take up a constitutional challenge to the state's new slot-machine law.

The court put the case on a fast track, scheduling oral arguments for March 9 in Pittsburgh.

"We think we have a strong case, and despite the requests by the gambling proponents in this matter who asked that the case be dismissed, apparently the court believes the matter is very important," said Michael Geer of Pennsylvanians Against Gambling Expansion Fund Inc., which led a coalition of opponents that sued in December over how the gambling legislation was passed.

The Supreme Court ordered both sides to submit written briefs by Feb. 25.
