Letter: Reid should lead proud, loyal opposition
Monday, Feb. 14, 2005 | 9:26 a.m.
The Republican National Committee sent out an e-mail smearing Sen. Harry Reid, labeling him an "obstructionist."
Here is my advice to the senator:
Please stand firm when Republicans call you an obstructionist. That's what your Democratic constituents want. We want you to obstruct the Republican bills that favor big corporations and the wealthy, to obstruct their agenda to destroy the Bill of Rights and our Constitution, to obstruct their attempt to dismantle Social Security, Medicaid and other social programs.
Democrats are the opposition party. It's your job to oppose partisan legislation. If you don't, we have one-party rule and there's no reason for Democrats to even show up.
Claim the obstructionist title proudly and use the opportunity to explain why you're obstructing the Republican legislation. This administration wants nothing but yes-men. That's not what Democrats are about.
They gave you a wonderful platform, senator. Use it and turn the tables. Milk it for the publicity and tell everyone you can that you will continue to obstruct legislation that's not in the best interest of our country and its people.
