Foothill clinches playoffs

The Foothill girls' basketball team struggled to put Liberty away in its 47-41 victory Thursday night. The Falcons had double-digit leads numerous times but let Liberty climb back into the game.
"We'd get ahead by like 12 or 14 points, but he kept fighting and clawing their way back into the game," Foothill coach Chris Sefcheck said.
Foothill clinched the final playoff berth in the Southeast Division with the win.
"We just couldn't put them away," Sefcheck said. "We got a bonus in the end with all the foul shots."
Foothill finished fourth behind Basic in the Southeast Division. The zone defense by Liberty confused the Falcons offense.
"It was the longest one minute of my life," Sefcheck said. "They played man-to-man most of the game, when they usually play zone."
Foothill was able to pull ahead in the second quarter when they hit four 3-pointers while Liberty briefly went into their zone defense.
Jessica Smit had 11 points to lead Silverado.
Scoring information for both teams was not reported.
Basic will play at Las Vegas on Tuesday in the Sunrise Region quarterfinals.
Stephanie Bernas had 21 points for Eldorado. Both teams open next Tuesday's regional quarterfinals on the road.
Valerie Lee had 30 for Canyon Springs in the loss.
