Letter: Students really dictate classroom
Thursday, Feb. 10, 2005 | 9:06 a.m.
I cannot believe that this situation with the drawing depicting the teacher's death is met with such dismissal, as if it's nothing serious. If the student would have written out in actual words that he wanted the teacher dead, would people still act with this "boys will be boys" mentality?
And now the teacher is the one getting fired! Are you kidding me? Has everyone forgotten Columbine? Maybe the student shouldn't be expelled, but should the teacher be fired? I'm all for free speech and freedom of expression, but the student was the one who was inappropriate, not the teacher.
Who's running the classrooms anyway? That's the problem with our education system today. Instead of emphasizing learning and helping our teachers educate, we allow the student to run the classroom and wonder why we rate the lowest in the country.
I certainly do hope common sense does prevail in this situation. But shouldn't the teacher be allowed more of the benefit? Thirty-two years as an educator shouldn't be allowed to be cut short because a student decides one day that he has too much free time on his hands.
Centennial High School should be ashamed of its actions.
