New Year festivities aimed at attracting Asian visitors

Chinese New Year celebrations begin today throughout the city and local resorts are rolling out the red carpet -- one of the popular colors for the holiday -- to greet Asian revelers.

The Las Vegas Convention and Visitors Authority has no projections for the number of people who will visit the city for the kick-off of 4702, known as the Year of the Rooster.

The Venetian Campanile tower will be dressed in red banners and a dragon dance is planned there tonight. A Chinese New Year parade is scheduled today at the Forum Shops at Caesars. The Bellagio conservatory commemorates the Year of the Rooster with a giant robotic rooster.

In past years, many resorts have placed welcomes with Chinese characters on their hotel marquees for the observance, which runs through Feb. 22.

The holiday also includes the Valentine's Day weekend, which also is strong for weddings and anniversaries, according to the LVCVA.
