Las Vegas woman honored by Nevada Army Guard

A 20-year-old Las Vegas woman on Sunday was named the Nevada Army Guard Non-commissioned Officer of the Year.

Sgt. Sandra Flores is an administrative NCO for the Guard's medical detachment in Las Vegas. She has spent the majority of her nearly four years in the Guard on activated status and has been deployed for much of that time, April Conway, the Nevada National Guard's spokeswoman, said in a press release.

Flores is a 2001 graduate of Virgin Valley High School in Mesquite. Since her enlistment in February 2001, Flores has spent more than two years in Iraq and Kuwait, Conway said. Flores also has served at the Presidio of Monterey with the 72nd Military Police Company.

Flores won the annual award after she "excelled at the NCO of the Year board that included representatives from each Army battalion in Nevada. The board included a series of military questions concerning soldier skills, Army values and current affairs. Finalists were also evaluated on appearance, military bearing, self confidence and conversational skills," Conway noted.

Flores now advances to compete in a regional NCO board.
