Nonprofit elects new board members

Monday, Feb. 7, 2005 | 10:58 a.m.

The National Center for Responsible Gaming has expanded its board of directors by electing a former lottery administrator, a tribal affairs expert and a casino executive.

The new directors are Jan Jones, a senior vice president at Harrah's Entertainment Inc. and mayor of Las Vegas from 1991 to 1999; Eileen Luna-Firebaugh, associate professor of American Indian studies at the University of Arizona and former executive director of the Massachusetts State Lottery Commission Eric M. Turner.

They were elected to the board at the organization's biannual meeting in Las Vegas in December.

The National Center for Responsible Gaming was created by the American Gaming Association, a trade group of commercial casinos and slot makers, to raise money for research on problem gambling and hasn't historically included lottery industry or tribal gaming members. The center is governed by a volunteer board whose primary responsibility is fundraising.

"With more Americans than ever visiting Native American casinos and playing lotteries, it is important for the NCRG's responsible gaming education efforts to reach beyond the commercial casinos," NCRG Chairman Dennis Eckart said of the addition of Luna-Firebaugh and Turner to the board.
