Letter: Boulder City remains vigilant against growth

Monday, Feb. 7, 2005 | 8:58 a.m.

In response to Susan Snyder's column on Jan. 24, I would like to thank her for addressing the problems of growth around Nevada.

I am a resident of Boulder City, which has a growth-control ordinance. We are constantly fighting those who want to circumvent our ordinance and open the city up to overdevelopment.

Right now there is a group pushing to make a deal with Henderson to buy and annex some of our precious land so it can come through the mountain with its growth. I doubt that development would be "gated" like they might get in Mesquite, Logandale and Overton. Instead, it would probably be like the congestion we see springing up around the new Henderson college. Or worse yet, it might give us a casino or two in our own backyard. Anyway, with the millions of dollars Henderson is willing to pay, we are supposed to pay off the city's bills on the new golf course.

I know that the services a city has to provide for congested growth, whether in the town or surrounding it, is costly. As we grow there will be more traffic, more police will have to be provided and there will have to be all the other services that go with the "G" word. New taxes will be a necessity.

If Susan runs out of material on this subject, she should take a look at Boulder City as it grows even with a growth-control ordinance. Some people can't stand living in a quaint, uncrowded community where we have a great family lifestyle.
