Fund set for slain man's daughter

An account has been established to help pay for the education of the 10-year-old daughter of a man who was shot while driving home from work Monday night.

Donations can be made at U.S. Bank for the Marissa McCoy Education Fund, account number 253750836988. Her father, John McCoy, a slots manager at the Rainbow Club in Henderson, was shot on Lone Mountain Road near Decatur Boulevard and died several hours later.

Christmas in April names official

Rebuilding Together with Christmas in April, Southern Nevada has named Dorothy A. Warren as marketing specialist.

In her new position, Warren will be responsible for developing and implementing strategies to successfully recruit clients for Christmas in April's many programs.

The organization provides housing rehabilitation services to the area's low-income seniors and the disabled through four different programs, including a year-round emergency program and the organization's signature project, Event Day, held every year on the last Saturday of April.

Clothing drive set for SafeNest

LogistiCare announced that its Las Vegas office is conducting a clothing drive for women and children who have escaped abusive situations and now are living in SafeNest, a domestic violence shelter in Las Vegas.

SafeNest is asking for clothes for women, apparel for children and toiletries.

Donation boxes will be located throughout the city and at the LogistiCare office, 3291 Buffalo Drive, Suite 7. Donations are being accepted through Feb. 14. Call 395-0411.

Habitat to build wheelchair house

The framing for the first Habitat for Humanity wheelchair accessible home in the state will begin 9 a.m. Saturday at East Merlayne Drive and Boulder Highway.

The home is being built for single mother Mary Guzman and her two children, Polo, 20, and Luciana, 9. Luciana has Cerebral Palsy and is wheelchair bound. The home will be fit to accommodate Luciana's wheelchair.

Volunteers will begin building the walls of the home and by the end of the day there will be a house standing. Polo helps support the family and will be one of the volunteers that will help build the project.

Mary, along with Polo, will contribute 250 hours to help build the home. For more information, call Laura Herlovich or Lisa Delcampo at 696-1999 or Susan Mackert of Habitat for Humanity at 638-6477.

Playground receives funding

The Salvation Army has secured funding for a new playground for the after-school program at its facility in Pahrump, and the group is recruiting volunteers to help them build it.

About $40,000 has been donated for the playground by an anonymous donor through KaBOOM, a nonprofit group based in Washington, D.C., the Salvation Army's Charles Desiderio said.

On March 19, parents and children from the after-school program at 721 S. Buol Road will construct the playground in one marathon session expected to last six hours.
