Tarkanian sworn in to office

Thursday, Feb. 3, 2005 | 9:59 a.m.

Surrounded by friends and family Lois Tarkanian was sworn in Wednesday as the newest member of the Las Vegas City Council.

Tarkanian, a member of the Clark County School Board during the 1990s, said she was honored, exhilarated, and feels a "heavy responsibility" as the new Ward 1 representative on the council.

Tarkanian defeated Councilwoman Janet Moncrief and activist Vicki Quinn in a recall election Jan 25. "I feel extremely honored to be with this group here at the City Council," Tarkanian said after being sworn in at the beginning of the Wednesday council meeting. "I'll try to do my best to ... bring this ward up."

Tarkanian said she hopes to increase citizen participation with the city government through resident committees and neighborhood meetings, the first of which she was hoping to hold later that day.

Mayor Oscar Goodman, himself a Ward 1 resident, said he was confident Tarkanian will take care of the ward, and later publicly thanked Moncrief, who was not at the meeting, for her time on the council.
