Retailer’s January sales rise

Thursday, Feb. 3, 2005 | 9:49 a.m.

Wal-Mart Stores Inc., the world's largest retailer, said January sales at U.S. stores open at least a year rose 2.5 percent, near the low end of its forecast, hurt by snowstorms in the Midwest and Northeast.

The discounter had forecast a gain of 2 percent to 4 percent from a year earlier. Wal-Mart's same-store sales rose 5.7 percent in January 2004.

Sales will rise 2 percent to 4 percent this month, Bentonville, Ark.-based Wal-Mart said today in a statement.

Wal-Mart had to close nearly four dozen stores because of blizzards that dumped as much as three feet in parts of the Northeast, crimping sales. Sales of food, televisions and video accessories lagged those of a year ago because the Super Bowl falls later, pushing pre-game sales into February, the company said.
