LV’s municipal pool wins another national award

Thursday, Feb. 3, 2005 | 8:36 a.m.

Las Vegas' award-winning swimming facility has received a top national honor, the city announced Monday.

The city aquatics unit, which is part of the Department of Leisure Services Recreation Division, won the National Recreation and Park Association's 2005 Excellence in Aquatics Award. The award will be presented on March 4, during the 20th National Aquatic Conference at the Riviera Hotel Convention Center.

The award comes a year after the city received three awards from the U.S. Water Fitness Association in 2004. The city's Municipal Pool was named top municipality aquatic program in the United States, top aquatic program in Nevada and one of the top 60 aquatic programs in the United States, a statement from the city said.

Also, the city's Aquatic Coordinator Scott Irvine was named one of the top 60 aquatic directors in the country.

The Municipal Pool, located at 431 E. Bonanza Road, near Las Vegas Boulevard North, is the centerpiece of the city's aquatics program and is open year-round.

The complex, with two classrooms and a fitness workout area, offers a variety of programs including open swimming, lifeguard and cardio-pulmonary resuscitation certification, synchronized swimming, water polo, competitive swimming, adult water fitness and water wellness classes, and scuba, swimming and diving lessons.

The city also has six other pools that are open only during the summer season.
