New homes approved on 16 acres

Members of the Henderson City Council acknowledged that when it comes to some development concerns, there just isn't a perfect answer. So they went ahead and approved a 16.5-acre home development Tuesday.
The development, along Horizon Ridge Parkway between Valare Street and Viento Puntero Drive, east of Stephanie Street, is planned to include 63 homes on lots ranging from 6,600 square feet to nearly 14,000 square feet.
Neighborhood residents asked the council to deny development because of traffic and height concerns and because of fear that the area is dangerous for children. They said they had hoped the area would be used for a park or other amenity.
The council had once considered a storage unit facility for the property, though that died -- in part because of the opposition of residents.
"As much as it hurts me to say this, the right answer to solve problems with this project is mini-storage," Councilman Steven Kirk said in reviewing neighbors' concerns.
"I think this goes to show us that we're not going to get a great project according to somebody," he said.
The councilmembers said they were sympathetic to the residents, but added that they thought the housing project is a good use for the property and unanimously approved it.
