Editorial: Why did this happen?
Wednesday, Feb. 2, 2005 | 9:11 a.m.
Since it formed in 1982, the UMC Foundation has raised more than $5 million for the pediatrics department at University Medical Center, the county hospital. Most of the money came from annual contracts the foundation negotiated with the Children's Miracle Network, which sponsors a telethon that raises funds for hospitalized children.
The hospital, however, decided last year to contract with CMN on its own, bypassing the foundation. The hospital failed and now CMN is on the verge of contracting with St. Rose Dominican Hospital and the foundation says it's on the verge of disbanding.
We don't understand why UMC severed its relationship with the foundation. We also don't understand why it wasn't able to sign a contract with CMN. After all of its good works, it would be a real shame if the foundation disbanded. It seems to us that UMC's top administrators should meet with the foundation's board and with representatives of CMN, with the goal of repairing relationships that worked exceptionally well for more than two decades.
