Caesars says tribe settled land claim with New York
Wednesday, Feb. 2, 2005 | 9:03 a.m.
Caesars Entertainment Inc., the world's largest casino company, said an American Indian tribe with which it's developing a New York casino settled a 22-year-old land claim with the state, removing a hurdle to building the property.
In exchange for dropping the claim, the St. Regis Mohawk tribe will receive $100 million, the right to purchase 14,000 acres of land, low-cost electric power and free college tuition at State University of New York schools, Las Vegas-based Caesars said in a statement today.
Caesars agreed in 2000 to develop a casino with the tribe in New York's Catskills, a resort area 90 miles from New York City. Caesars will manage the Mohawk Mountain Casino Resort and the tribe will own it. Other issues remain to be resolved before construction can begin, Caesars said.
