Bilbray considered for BRAC job

Former Nevada Rep. James Bilbray may fill the Democrat's spot on the upcoming Base Closure and Realignment Commission, or BRAC.

Senate Minority Leader Harry Reid, D-Nev., recommended Bilbray for the position, according to statement released from his office today.

The commission will ultimately review the defense secretary's upcoming recommendations for closing or changing military operations at bases. The commission can change the recommended closings and will hold regional meeting to get public input on which bases will be affected and then forward its own recommendations to Congress.

President Bush must selecte nine commissioners by March 15 under the BRAC rules. Reid, as the top Democrat in the Senate, gets to recommend one person for an appointment, but Bilbray's spot is not final yet. The president must formally nominate the nine people who then need Senate confirmation. The commission will serve until April 15, 2006.

Bilbray served four terms in the House of Representatives.

Man shot while driving his car

A man died this morning at University Medical Center several hours after he was shot while driving along Lone Mountain Road near Decatur Boulevard, Metro Police said.

Police were sent to the area about midnight after the victim crashed his car into a wall. When officers arrived they saw the driver was suffering from a gunshot wound, Sgt. Chris Jones, police spokesman, said.

Witnesses told police a brown Lincoln had been spotted in the area and officers broadcast the description of the car over the police radio.

A short time later North Las Vegas Police found the Lincoln at Lone Mountain Road and Allen Lane and arrested the driver and passenger in connection with the shooting.

Metro's gang crimes section was still investigating the shooting this morning, Jones said.

Victim believed shot near bar

Metro Police are investigating what prompted a shooting outside a Las Vegas bar early this morning.

Officers responded to Pink E's Fun Food & Spirits in the 3600 block of West Flamingo Road, near Valley View Boulevard and Industrial Road, about 1:45 a.m. after employees reported hearing gunshots in the parking lot, Officer Jose Montoya, a Metro spokesman said.

No victims were found at the scene of the shooting, although several shell casings indicated a shooting had taken place, he said. The department later received a call from University Medical Center, saying a man had been dropped off for treatement of non-life-threatening gunshot wounds, Montoya said.

The man remained at UMC this morning but his condition was not available.

School Board didn't violate meeting law

The Clark County School Board did not violate the state's open meeting law by not posting in Moapa Valley a copy of its Nov. 18 meeting agenda, an investigation by Nevada's attorney general has determined.

The complaint, filed with the state Dec. 7 by Lisa Wilson, alleged the School Board had violated state statute that requires agendas be posted at least three working days in advance of public meetings.

Senior Deputy Attorney General Neil Rombardo, in a decision released Monday, determined the School Board agenda for its Nov. 18 meeting were appropriately posted at its "principal office," on the district's Web site and at three other "prominent places within the jurisdiction," as required by statute.

The notices were also posted five working days prior to the meeting being held, two days more than required by statute, Rombardo said.

While there was no finding of fault, the School Board has agreed to begin posting its meeting agenda notices in the rural areas it serves, Rombardo said.
