Letter: It’s time to explore climate issues in LV

Regarding Gary Beckman's Dec. 19 letter on global warming:

Having worked as a policy adviser for the United Nations Environment Programme from 1999 to 2004, including working with Tony Blair's government on climate change, I would like to add that even my colleagues at the U.N. Climate Change Secretariat are concerned about how countries who signed the Kyoto Protocol will actually implement it.

The most effective implementation always happens at a local, more manageable level, as national governments are slow and bureaucratic machines. I don't think anyone is disputing that carbon dioxide emissions need to be reduced. However, it comes down to citizens and businesses being empowered with plain English information on why, what and how. That is why I applaud Mayor Oscar Goodman for signing the Climate Protection Agreement at the Annual Mayors Conference in June.

So, as an environmental policy consultant, I look forward to working with the mayor on finding innovative carbon dioxide reduction solutions and providing businesses with incentives to invent alternative energy sources that will make Las Vegas cool, clean and prosperous.
