Henderson ministorage plans put on hold

The developer of a proposed RV and ministorage facility has asked Henderson for more time before seeking approval to build across the street from an upscale subdivision.
The Henderson City Council was scheduled to decide Tuesday whether to allow a 446-unit storage facility with 24 recreational vehicle spaces near the entrance to MacDonald Highlands. But the council instead will consider the request of Bill and Jodi Davis on Feb. 7.
The Davis' planning consultant, George Garcia, said the delay gives him time to address concerns raised by a handful of MacDonald Highlands residents during a Dec. 7 neighborhood meeting.
"I think we can address them from a practical standpoint and on a rational standpoint, but in the end it comes down to human nature," Garcia said.
Some owners of the multimillion-dollar houses in MacDonald Highlands said they do not want to look down from their hillside homes onto the 4.5-acre storage facility, which would be surrounded by 12-foot walls. The site, northeast of Horizon Ridge Parkway and Valle Verde Drive, is zoned for residential, office or retail uses. A zoning change is required for the land to be used as a storage facility.
"As long as the proposed use remains constant, we are not going to support the project no matter what is done to address questions," said Paul Bykowski, vice president of land development for MacDonald Highlands. "It is still a ministorage facility."
Bykowski wants the developer to build homes, offices or retail facilities that do not generate 24-hour use. Residents are worried that the proposed storage facility would trigger more crime, he added.
