Letter: Liberal platform has weak foundation
Monday, Dec. 12, 2005 | 8:57 a.m.
Shel Berlatsky's Nov. 21 letter contained nothing but the same ol' vindictive ravings of a beaten party, one that Berlatsky may remember lost the last general election by about 4 million votes.
Democrats were beaten by a party of "inept stumblebums" -- Berlatsky's term to describe members of the Bush administration -- that had the sense to run on values that the American people understood and cared about instead of a nothing platform containing only one plank: Beat Bush.
Berlatsky's accusations that Bush is blatantly corrupt, distorts the truth, makes a mockery of the law, misled the people, ad nauseum are just that, accusations.
It is strange that these accusations never turn into anything when the facts are examined. They are simply the result of Democrats looking under every rock for something with which to "get Bush."
As to Bush being arrogant and having cronies, I say, what politician is not and does not? I am sure that if Berlatsky supported Clinton and Kerry, Berlatsky is well attuned to these qualities.
Here is some disturbing news, and that is that the Democrats seem not to have figured out that Bush will not be running in 2008. This means that they will have no platform to display except high taxes, pro-abortion, socialized medicine and a weak, reactive national defense.
We all know that these positions will not fly with a majority of the American people. To compound their difficulties, the economy is rolling right along and they will not have that to harp on.
So, alas, what are the Democrats to do? My advice is that they direct their efforts away from "getting Bush," decide what their real values are and develop a positive message that is not simply designed to tear someone down. Who knows? They might then even win an election.
