Letter: Northern valley needs to adapt to air traffic

Friday, Dec. 9, 2005 | 9:13 a.m.

We purchased our home in Green Valley in late 2000. At that time, we had little notice of the air traffic out of McCarran International Airport. A year later we began to notice the increase in overhead activity and associated sound. We were surprised at this since we had frequently flown east out of Las Vegas and predominantly flown over the northern portion of the valley. We later realized that there was a change in the traffic pattern leaving McCarran.

With the continuing increase in air traffic in and out of the valley, we are very pleased that the Federal Aviation Administration is considering returning some of that traffic to the old pattern over northern parts of the valley. It is time for the residents of that part of the valley to again share what we have increasingly been experiencing since late 2001.

I believe many of the residents of the southern end of the valley would also feel quite strongly about having to continue to carry the nearly full burden of this increasing air traffic. I find it a little unreasonable that residents of Summerlin and North Las Vegas are so unwilling to have a share of the air traffic. Do southern valley residents also need to be as vocal as our northern neighbors?
