Letter: Theory of evolution not so scientific

Monday, Dec. 5, 2005 | 8:31 a.m.

After reading the Nov. 21 letter from Mark J. Chambers, who has a Ph.D. and is president of Skeptics of Las Vegas, I feel compelled to, point by point, refute his letter supporting evolution.

Consider the following:

The evolution "theory" can be boiled down to one simple statement: We can't explain it, so it must have taken a long, long time.

Like most "skeptics," Dr. Chambers does not even follow his own "rational" thought processes. The "theory" of evolution contains no empirical evidence supporting evolution from pond scum to the infinitely complex human being.

Mr. Chambers also makes the common mistake of rationalizing evolution as fact. While there are variations within a species, such as hair color, eye color or skin color, there is no scientific data, neither the fossil record nor DNA research, that indicate that one species evolved into another presently or in the distant past.

Finally, the good doctor's assertions that studies of quarks, gravity, and oxygen are akin to evolution would be amusing if he weren't a psychologist duty-bound to help people rid themselves of their fantasies and promote rational thought in their lives.

Perhaps if he considered that there just might be a higher intelligence out there than his own, he might just learn something.
