Letter: Economy is healthy, but for whom?

President Bush gave a speech Friday on the nation's healthy economy. He said that is because of spending restraints and tax cuts.

He seems to forget that General Motors recently announced the planned closure of about a half dozen plants. And Friday The Wall Street Journal reported that Ford was planning five plant closures, and there is speculation that Saturn might join them.

This speech was obviously another attempt by the Rove/Cheney White House to lift the president's approval rating. That is hard to do when the reports from Iraq are that 10 Marines died Friday.

Contrary to the president's definition of a booming economy, which stresses the high-end figures of Wall Street, mine stresses the economics of every family, not just the highfliers.

Let's start with the affordability of the cost of medical care, ever growing personal debt and quality of life for the least of our citizens.
