Editorial: Tourism makes a run for the money

Sunday's New Las Vegas Marathon isn't what people expect in Sin City -- the land of big buffets, massive casinos and any number of other adult activities that aren't considered "athletic" in the traditional sense.

But here we are, with an event in which more than 11,000 runners will compete for a share of $302,000 in prize money.

Many will be glad to simply survive the 26.2-mile footrace. But others, including a quartet of world-class runners from Kenya, will focus on winning a separate $1.25 million jackpot for beating the world record.

Still, this New Las Vegas Marathon is as much about tourism as blisters, big money and sweaty Elvis impersonators.

Event organizers expect four of every five racers to be from out of town. Add to that number at least a couple of family members or friends who will travel in tow and shop, eat and maybe play some slots, poker or blackjack. It's a substantial chunk of tourist change.

We should work harder to expand our tourism by recognizing that Las Vegas' great weather and stunning backdrop provides an opportunity to attract another type of visitor -- one who is willing to pay for the privilege of playing in the outdoors many of us who live here treasure.

Maybe this New Las Vegas Marathon will also inspire better local support and promotion of the smaller running, cycling and triathlon events that struggle to survive year after year.

After all, anybody can host a marathon. But only one city can offer the chance to run down the middle of the Las Vegas Strip.

And to that we say, on your mark, get set, go!
