Letter: No surprise what’s at root of corruption

Reading and watching news accounts of Republican Congressman Tom DeLay's indictment for money laundering, Republican Senate Majority Leader Bill Frist being questioned by the SEC for insider trading, Vice President Dick Cheney's chief of staff being indicted for obstruction of justice and perjury, Karl Rove being investigated for the leak to the media of the identity of a CIA operative, the indictment and arrest of the White House's chief procurement officer for perjury and the indictment of Republican Congressman Duke Cunningham of California for accepting bribes all bring to mind a quote penned by historian Lord Acton (1834-1902): "Power tends to corrupt, and absolute power corrupts absolutely."

In all fairness, though, the same malaise occurred with the Democrats when they had control of Congress.
