Hearing planned on autopsy

Las Vegas Sun

The family of 3-month-old Genesis Acosta-Garcia, who died in the custody of the county, wants an autopsy done on the infant.

A hearing is tentatively scheduled today in Family Court to determine if the Clark County coroner's office should conduct an autopsy on the child, Assistant Coroner John Fudenberg said.

"The family would like a court order to be issued for the coroner to conduct the autopsy. The coroner's office would be more than happy to comply (if a judge issues the order)," he said.

Vincent Ochoa, the lawyer representing the family, said the family merely wants to know why the baby died.

"We're just trying to gather all the facts," he said. "We want to find out why a healthy -- but premature -- baby died so suddenly."

Genesis, who was in foster care, died on Nov. 19 at University Medical Center.
