Letter: It’s a shame poor died needlessly during hurricane

Wednesday, Aug. 31, 2005 | 9:20 a.m.

As I listened to the news on Monday, I was shocked and angered to learn how many people had to stay in their homes in Louisiana, Mississippi and Alabama because they were too poor to flee from the wrath of hurricane Katrina.

One person after another told reporters how they lacked transportation or the funds to buy gas or stay in a hotel outside the danger zone.

Now at least 55 people are dead in these states. What message does this send to the rest of the world? How can we claim to be a Christian society when we allow the poor to die so needlessly?

Shame on us.
