Kerr doesn't waste opportunity

At Dublin, Ohio, Cristie Kerr won the Wendy's Championship for Children, closing with a 3-under 69 shortly after Pat Hurst fell from a tie for the lead with a double-bogey on the last hole.

This was Kerr's second victory of the year and sixth of her career. She finished at 18-under 270, one shot ahead of Paula Creamer and Annika Sorenstam. Creamer, the third-round leader, had a 71 and Sorenstam a 66, matching the day's low round.

Hurst's closing 70 left her at 272, tied with Jeong Jang, who closed with a 67. Karrie Webb (70) and Soo-Yun Kang (72) were at 273, with Michele Redman alone at 274 after a 72. U.S. Women's Amateur champion Morgan Pressel finished with a 70 and was at 278.

Lopez picks Ward, Daniel for U.S. team

Nancy Lopez went with veterans for her two captain's picks to the U.S. Solheim Cup team, selecting Wendy Ward and Hall of Famer Beth Daniel to complete the 12-player team that will face Europe on Sept. 9-11 at Crooked Stick in Carmel, Ind.

Lopez announced her choices Sunday after Cristie Kerr, the No. 1 player on the U.S. Solheim points list, won the Wendy's Championship for Children.

Also on the team are LPGA rookie of the year Paula Creamer, Laura Diaz, Natalie Gulbis, Pat Hurst, Juli Inkster, Rosie Jones, Christina Kim, Meg Mallon, Michele Redman and Kerr.

Creamer is the first rookie to make the U.S. team.

"All I can say is they (the Europeans) had better get ready because they're going to get beat," she said, her teammates laughing and applauding behind her. "I'm putting it down. I'm very confident."

Howell holds off Daly by one stroke

At Nord-Eichenried, Germany, David Howell won his first title in six years, shooting a 7-under 65 to beat John Daly by a stroke at the BMW International Open.

Daly closed with a 64 and missed a 6-foot birdie attempt on the last hole that would have caught the Ryder Cup player.

Howell finished at 23-under 265 on one of the European tour's easiest courses. Daly and Brett Rumford (65) shared second, while Niclas Fasth (64) and Soren Kjeldsen (66) were at 267.

Howell, who twice lost in playoffs in May, won his other title at the 1999 Dubai Classic.
