Company cuts Internet access price, expands service

Verizon Wireless, the second-largest U.S. mobile-phone services provider, is cutting the price of its fast wireless Internet access by $20 as it expands the service to seven new markets across the country including San Francisco.

With the move into cities such as Baton Rouge, La., and Charlotte, N.C., Verizon Wireless says it offers data services to 140 million people in 61 U.S. markets. Current customers will pay about $60 a month, down from $79.99 now, for unlimited Web access under new two-year contracts, while new voice and data users can get that price with one- or two-year agreements.

The expansion and price cut are aimed at attracting individual customers such as college students and mobile professionals along with business clients for whom the service was designed, Chief Marketing Officer John Stratton said Sunday.
