Company to extend employee discount program to Sept. 30

General Motors Corp., the world's biggest automaker, will extend its offer of employee discounts to all U.S. buyers until the end of September as it tries to boost sales of its cars and trucks.

The discounts apply to most 2005 models, GM spokeswoman Deborah Silverman said today. Some large 2006 sport-utility vehicles and pickup trucks will be added to the program for the first time, she said. The promotion was to end Sept. 6.

GM was the first automaker to offer the employee discounts in June in an effort to end declines in its U.S. market share, which dipped to an 80-year low as Toyota Motor Corp. and other Asian automakers increased sales. GM is extending the discount a second time after initial plans to end it in August.
