McKie joins Lakers

Free-agent guard Aaron McKie, waived by the Philadelphia 76ers earlier this month, has agreed to terms of a two-year, $5 million contract with the Los Angeles Lakers.

McKie has averaged 7.6 points, 3.3 rebounds and 2.7 assists in 11 seasons with Portland, Detroit and Philadelphia. He scored 4,143 points in seven-plus seasons with the 76ers, and won the 2001 Sixth Man of the Year award when he helped the Sixers reach the NBA Finals, where they lost to the Lakers in five games.

Phil Jackson, returning next season as coach of the Lakers after taking a year off, likes big guards, and the 6-foot-5 McKie fills that bill.

The 7-foot, 257-pound Boumtje Boumtje played five games for the Magic during the summer league in Las Vegas, averaging 4.8 points and 3.6 rebounds.

Mighty Ducks bring back Selanne

Right wing Teemu Selanne, the second-leading scorer in Anaheim history, returned to the Mighty Ducks.

The 35-year-old free agent signed a one-year, $1 million contract with the team he played for from 1996-01.

Selanne, a nine-time All-Star, has averaged 37 goals year in 12 NHL seasons. Since entering the league with Winnipeg in 1992, he has 452 goals. Only Jaromir Jagr (478) has scored more.

Shaughnessy ends losing streak to Dechy

Meghann Shaughnessy beat Nathalie Dechy for the first time in their 10 meetings, upsetting last year's finalist and this year's ninth-seeded player in the Pilot Pen tournament.

The unseeded Shaughnessy advanced to the second round with a 7-6 (3), 2-6, 6-4 victory in the event missing most top players, who are preparing for the U.S. Open next week.

In another upset in the $600,000 women's competition, unseeded Anna Chakvetadze beat 10th-seeded Jelena Jankovic 6-3, 3-6, 6-2.

For the first time in the Pilot Pen's eight years, it also is holding an ATP event for men with total prize money of $585,000. Three of the world's top 20 ranked players are entered, led by No. 6 Nikolay Davydenko.

New Mexico junior leads at U.S. Am

University of New Mexico junior Charlie Beljan shot a 6-under 64 at Philadelphia Country Club to take the first-round lead in stroke-play qualifying for the U.S. Amateur Championship.
