Letter: Time to discuss politics, religion

President Bush is right; withdrawing our troops from Iraq now would send the wrong message. We should wait until all of the oil in Iraq is gone or until we lose more than 50,000 troops. Unlike Vietnam, we know what we're fighting for -- oil and more money for Bush's base, the "haves and the have-mores."

Now, let's discuss what's really important -- intelligent design versus Darwin's theory of evolution.

As a young boy I asked a Catholic priest why science and the Bible were at odds. The Bible tells us that God made the world in six days and rested on the seventh. Science says it took millions and billions of years to form the world. The priest answered with a question that I still remember. It has given me peace and allowed me to accept both science and religion.

"How do you know that the six days were 24 hours long? If God willed it, each day could have lasted millions or billions of years," the priest answered.

Maybe we're in the eighth day of creation and God, after a short break, is still working on the world, in His own good time. I, for one, am still a work in progress.
