Fishing report: Boaters find action; shore anglers wait

LAKE MEAD: Fishing continues to be good for boaters in the Las Vegas Wash Arm and around Fish Island in the Overton Arm while shore fishing remains extremely slow throughout the lake.

Boaters are catching striped bass in the Las Vegas Wash Arm with top water lures, jigs and by drifting bait. There have been reports that some boaters are catching fish at a depth of 100 feet.

A few stripers have been caught recently by boaters around the Boulder Islands. Some fish have been caught as well in the area around Boxcar and Crawdad coves. Most of the stripers that have been caught recently weigh a little less than 1 pound or as much as 2 pounds.

Warm weather and poor fishing has resulted in very few shore fishermen being seen at the lake during the past few weeks. NDOW biologists do not expect shore fishing to improve until the water temperature drops.

LAKE MOHAVE: Boaters are having good luck for stripers just beyond the narrows above Cottonwood Cove. Drifting anchovies has been the ticket for catching the fish, most of which are small and weigh a pound or less.

Willow Beach was scheduled to be stocked today.

KIRCH WILDLIFE MANAGEMENT AREA: Storms have been keeping anglers away from the area, but the few who have been fishing have enjoyed fair action for rainbow trout and largemouth bass.

Two fishermen who were checked by NDOW creel census clerks over the weekend had nine trout that ranged 12-16 inches. Largemouth bass were being caught as well over the weekend.

EAGLE VALLEY RESERVOIR: Good fishing has been found recently for stocked rainbow trout with boaters enjoying better success than those who are limited to fishing from shore.

A fishing tournament sponsored by Eagle Valley Resort in Ursine will be at the lake and nearby Echo Canyon Reservoir on Saturday from 8 a.m. to 2 p.m. Entry fee is $25 and anglers will be shooting for a tagged fish that is worth $50,000 if caught during the tournament.

ECHO CANYON RESERVOIR: Fishing has been good recently for rainbow trout, white crappie and largemouth bass. The lake's water level is low, as is typical for this time of year.

URBAN PONDS: Park ponds were stocked with channel catfish this week. There will be two more catfish plants before rainbow trout plants begin in late October or early November.
