Council to vote again on more slots at mall bar

It was unclear Thursday whether the Las Vegas City Council will be called on to again vote on whether to allow a restaurant/bar at the Meadows mall to add more slot machines.

Despite objections of neighbors of the mall, a split council on Wednesday approved a tavern license for TomFoolery, a restaurant/bar at the mall, which cleared the way for the business to add 10 more slot machines.

That vote now has raised a question as to whether the City Council will have to vote Sept. 7 to formally allow 10 more slot machines at TomFoolery, or whether city staff can OK the additional slot machines without further council action, city Business Services Manager Jim DiFiore said Thursday.

The restaurant/bar already has five slot machines, which came after the council approved the business's gaming license in June, DiFiore said.

Because the gaming license already exists, city staff might be allowed to OK the addition of 10 more slot machines, which were effectively given the council's blessing on Wednesday, DiFiore said.

DiFiore said city employees are reviewing the legal issues involved.

The council voted 4-3 on Wednesday to grant the tavern license, although the council placed special conditions on their approval, including requiring the restaurant/bar to close from 4 a.m. to 8 a.m. Monday through Friday.

The special restrictions placed on the tavern license appeared to limit the impact of the new license to allowing the additional slot machines.
