T.J. Bohn made a game-saving catch in center field with the bases loaded in the ninth inning as Tacoma held on to beat Las Vegas, 3-2, on Thursday.
The win, combined with Salt Lake's 5-4 loss to Portland, allowed the Rainiers to move into sole possession of first place in the Pacific Coast League's Pacific North Division.
The 51s already had scored a run in the inning against Rainiers closer Masao Kida. Las Vegas loaded the bases and Mike Edwards scored on an error by shortstop Justin Leone. Henri Stanley grounded into a force play at home before Delwyn Young hit a drive to center field that eventually was caught by a leaping Bohn.
Tacoma scored all its runs in the fourth inning, which started with back-to-back doubles by Shin-Soo Choo and Jose Lopez. Greg Dobbs singled to plate Lopez and eventually came around on a single by Justin Leone.
Seattle Mariners pitcher Jesse Foppert started and pitched 1 2/3 strong innings. Foppert, acquired from the San Francisco Giants in the Randy Winn trade July 30, was on a 35-pitch limit and went 1 2/3 innings. He gave up one hit and struck out two.
Reliever Rafael Soriano continued his rehabilitation assignment, giving up one hit and fanning two in two-thirds of an inning.
