Smoking opponents consider petition drive

CLAYTON, Mo. -- Smoking opponents are mulling a petition drive to place a smoking ban proposal on the ballot next year in St. Louis County.

The task would require a petition signed by more than 25,000 residents, or 5 percent of the number of county voters in the last election for governor.

Talk of the petition drive comes after the St. Louis County Council voted Tuesday against banning smoking in most public buildings except bowling alleys, Lambert Airport, Harrah's Casino and small bars. The measure failed 4-3.

Harrah's could have designated 50 percent of its gaming area for smokers under the proposal, a move that the casino said would have hurt its revenue.
