Volunteer workshop planned at church
The Volunteer Central Live workshop will be held from 8:30 a.m. to 3 p.m. Sept. 10 at Community Lutheran Church, 3720 E. Tropicana Ave.
Volunteer Central will present the workshop "Multiply Your Ministry: Moving from Sitting to Serving," where the focus is on building a culture where people get to serve instead of have to serve.
The workshop offers practical steps for building and equipping a church.
Registration is $79; $59 for member groups of 10 or more.

Class planned in human resources
Community College of Southern Nevada will sponsor the Human Resource Management Certification Series. The 11-week program will be held on consecutive Tuesday evenings at the Summerlin High Tech Center of CCSN beginning at 6 p.m.
The certification series concludes on Dec. 6. Tim Schneider, president and founder of Soaring Eagle Enterprises, will be the lead instructor and facilitator for the program.
Participants will receive continuing education credit units and the Human Resource Management Certification upon completion of the program. Registration is $460.00; and a $80.00 material fee is due at the first class meeting. Individual classes range from $55.00 to $95.00.

Program scheduled on kids' safety
Parents, teens and children are invited to attend a free program on safety presented by the local FBI task force on crimes against children at 6:30 p.m. today at the Sahara West Library, 9600 W. Sahara Ave.
The Internet offers education, entertainment and communication with people all around the world, however it can also attract con artists, pedophiles and other material to which parents might not want their children exposed. Learn ways to keep kids safe from potential crime and on-line predators.

Seminar to help firefighter hopefuls
An information seminar for prospective firefighters is scheduled from 6 p.m. to 8 p.m. Sept. 15 at the Rainbow Library, 3150 N. Buffalo Road.
Recruitment for firefighter trainee involves a highly competitive process and early preparation for the written and physical ability exams is necessary.

Genealogy group plans speakers
Michael Brenner and Mary Barkan will be the speakers when the Jewish Genealogy Society of Southern Nevada meets at 1 p.m. Sept. 18 in the multi-purpose room of the Sahara West Library, 9600 W. Sahara Ave.
Brenner's topics will include "Back to the Basics" and "On Line Translators." He will also cover "Research Tools" and "Soundex."
Barkan's topics will include "Dictionaries and Gazetteers" and "Unusual Resources."

Builders' course set Sept. 10
Estimating will be the next topic covered in the Certified Graduate Builder's 2005 Series, sponsored by the Lied Institute for Real Estate Studies in conjunction with the Southern Nevada Homebuilder's Association and the Greater Las Vegas Association of Realtors.
The course will be from 8 a.m. to 4 p.m. Sept. 10 at the GLVAR, 1750 E. Sahara Ave. The instructor for this course is Neil Opfer of the Department of Civil and Environmental Engineering.
Interested participants have the option of taking only selected courses at $185.00 per course or signing up for the entire series. The nine-course package is available for the CGB designation for $1600.00 and all 11 courses are available for $1800.00.

MDA boot drive kicks off Aug. 24
A press conference will kick off the annual Southern Nevada Firefighter Boot Drive at 10 a.m. Aug. 24 at the Henderson Training Center, 401 Parkson Road, Henderson, to benefit the Muscular Dystrophy Association.
City and state officials will be on hand to present proclamations to commend the Henderson, Las Vegas, Clark County, North Las Vegas and Pahrump fire departments.
Firefighters from each department will be standing on over 75 street corners throughout Southern Nevada from Aug. 25 to Sept. 3, asking motorists to "fill the boot" with donations.
Las Vegas Civil War Round Table
will present "General George Custer" at its next meeting at 6:30 p.m. Aug. 24 in the Old Mormon Fort's Visitors Center. Call 743-3932.
