Sands Macau raises junket commissions to record

Tuesday, Aug. 16, 2005 | 10:58 a.m.

Las Vegas Sands Corp.'s casino in Macau raised commissions paid to local gambling-junket operators to a record as it forges ahead in the lucrative high-roller market, the South China Morning Post reported.

The increase may unsettle rival casino operators including gambling tycoon Stanley Ho, who has said such a move would mean "war," the Hong Kong-based, English-language newspaper said, citing unidentified industry people.

Ho's Sociedade de Jogos de Macau gives junket operators a commission of 0.5 percent to 1.1 percent, the report said. The Sands raised commissions to as high as 1.3 percent, it said. Galaxy Casino SA and Sands previously capped commissions at 1.1 percent, the report said.

Junket operators are responsible for bringing high rollers to a market where VIP baccarat alone accounts for 70 percent of all gambling revenue, the report said.
