International tourism to Las Vegas increases

Tuesday, Aug. 16, 2005 | 10:53 a.m.

The LVCVA compiled the information based on data from the U.S. Department of Commerce as well as in-flight surveys of international travelers.

The United Kingdom was the No. 1 market for Las Vegas tourists, up 8 percent to 392,000 people. Tourism from Britain benefited from an increase in nonstop flights to Las Vegas including the October debut of service from Manchester, England to Las Vegas on BMI.

Japan was second with 217,000 people, a 30 percent increase. That marks a dramatic turnaround from previous years when Japanese tourism declined as a result of 9-11, the SARS virus and the Asian economic downturn. Germany was third with 119,000 visitors, a 24 percent increase.

Canada is still Las Vegas' top international market. Last year witnessed 25 percent more Canadian visitors or about 1.5 million people. Visitation from Mexico rose 15 percent to 313,000.
