Letter: Nevada’s quarter is disappointing

WEEKEND EDITION

August 13-14, 2005

As a former 30-year resident of Las Vegas who now lives in St. George, Utah, I was looking forward to the Nevada quarter. You can well imagine my dismay when I saw the tasteless and unappealing design for Nevada -- three horses and sagebrush.

Sagebrush is Texas. Nevada is excitement. What do people think when they hear Nevada? It isn't horses or sagebrush. They think casinos. Nevada was built by casinos and cattle. I designed the Nevada quarter in my mind in about two minutes. It shows a casino, a cow, the largest man-made lake, Lake Mead, and also one of the most magnificent engineering feats of the 20th century -- Hoover Dam.

Three horses and sagebrush. What a letdown. Are you sure the people on the design committee were from Nevada?
