Fishing report: It sure has been tough for shore anglers

NEVADA DEPARTMENT OF WILDLIFE

LAKE MEAD: It's the same old story as boaters seem to be having all of the luck for striped bass while anglers who are confined to the shoreline are still waiting for the fish to come within range.

Boaters have been enjoying fair success for stripers by jigging in the area from Gypsum Wash toward Black Island. Drifting with anchovies and casting top water lures has produced some fish as well.

Stripers have been hitting in the area around Boxcar and Crawdad coves. Some stripers weighing around 5 pounds have been taken recently, but most of the fish are much smaller with many weighing less than a pound.

One shore angler recently caught several stripers that weighed 2-3 pounds with anchovies at the mouth of Pumphouse Cove. Otherwise, shore fishing has been so poor that the most diehard fishermen are staying away from the lake.

Boaters who have been fishing in the Overton Arm have had luck for stripers recently at Fish Island, Ann Marguret Cove, St. Thomas and Stewart's Point. Largemouth and smallmouth bass have been caught as well at Fish Island and St. Thomas.

LAKE MOHAVE: Small stripers that are less than 15 inches continue to be caught with anchovies by boaters in the narrows above Cottonwood Cove. Rainbow trout was scheduled to be stocked today at Willow Beach.

EAGLE VALLEY RESERVOIR: Fishing has been hit or miss as some anglers have enjoyed fairly good luck for stocked rainbow trout while others have had little or no luck recently. NDOW will resume its trout plants of the lake in the fall when water temperatures are cool enough to allow stocking to take place.

ECHO CANYON RESERVOIR: Largemouth bass and trout fishing are fair in the lake, despite the dropping water level. Small spinners are catching the bass while PowerBait has been catching the trout.

KIRCH WILDLIFE MANAGEMENT AREA: Very few anglers were seen at the area over the weekend, but those who were there had some luck for rainbow trout and largemouth bass.

Dacey Reservoir and the upper ends of Adams-McGill, Cold Springs and Haymeadow reservoirs will open to fishing on Tuesday, Aug. 16. Those areas are closed to trespass each year from Feb. 15 through Aug. 15 to allow waterfowl and other birds to nest without being disturbed.

URBAN PONDS: Channel catfish will be stocked Monday in ponds at Floyd Lamb State Park, Lorenzi Park and Sunset Park in Las Vegas and Veterans Memorial Park in Boulder City. -- Nevada Department of Wildlife
