Worker killed at construction site

A 45-year-old construction worker was killed Wednesday when he was struck by an earth moving vehicle at a North Las Vegas construction site.

The worker, who was tentatively identified by other construction workers as Greg Andreoli, was killed about 11:30 a.m. at a construction site at McCarran Street and Rome Boulevard.

He was killed when the earth mover struck him, said Sean Walker, spokesman for North Las Vegas Police.

"It was clearly a construction accident," Walker said, who added that the investigation is being conducted by Nevada OSHA.

Tom Czehowski, chief administrative officer for Nevada OSHA, said he could not comment on the incident because the agency is currently investigating the fatality.

Andreoli reportedly worked for Pipes Paving, a North Las Vegas-based heavy construction company. Pipes Paving workers declined to comment at the scene of the accident and an employee who answered the telephone at the company's office declined to comment and then hung up.

A worker with American Asphalt & Grading who arrived at the scene, Mike Ewy, said he had known Andreoli for several years and is married to Andreoli's ex-wife.

"He's a good guy," he said.

Ewy said Andreoli was experienced on construction sites and had been a construction worker for at least 12 years.

In fiscal year 2005, OSHA Nevada investigated 23 worksite fatalities in Nevada, with 15 of those investigations occurring in Clark County, Czehowski said. The remaining eight investigations occurred throughout the state, he said.

Most recently, OSHA investigated the death of Davis Antonio Nizzi, 50, who was killed on June 6 at an American Asphalt & Grading work site in North Las Vegas. Nizzi was killed in an accident involving a front-end loader.

OSHA Nevada's investigation into the fatality is closed and no fines were levied against American Asphalt & Grading, Czehowski said.

In another fatal accident, 26-year-old, Jeffrey David "Shifty" Stombaugh was killed May 10 on Centennial Centre Boulevard northwest of Ann Road and U.S. 95 when he was run over by a truck.

Southern Nevada Paving, the company that employed Stombaugh was not fined or penalized, according to the OSHA Web site.
