Lance Armstrong
President Bush intends to reappoint seven-time Tour de France champion Lance Armstrong to a panel that monitors cancer research.
Armstrong would continue serving on the President's Cancer Panel for the rest of a three-year term that expires Feb. 20, 2008, the White House said. Armstrong finished serving a term on the panel on Feb. 20.
The three-member commission provides periodic reports to the president on issues surrounding cancer research, incidence and care.
Nick Fazekas
UNR junior Nick Fazekas was named to an elite list of candidates for next season's John R. Wooden Award.
The star forward from Arvada, Colo., who was named the Western Athletic Conference's player of the year last year as a sophomore is among 50 preseason picks for the Wood Award's 2005-2006 All-America Team.
They include two players who were members of last year's All-America team -- J.J.Redick of Duke and Dee Brown of Illinois.
Sheldon Williams (Duke) and Craig Smith (Boston College) join Redick and Brown as the only preseason candidates named to last years official voting ballot.
Other preseason candidates that were in the running for last years Wooden Award include guards Justin Gray (Wake Forest), Chris Hernandez (Stanford), Carl Krauser (Pittsburgh) and Gerry McNamara (Syracuse); and forwards Leon Powe (California), P.J. Tucker (Texas) and Curtis Withers (Charlotte).
Michelle Wie
Appearing on CBS's "Late Show with David Letterman" Monday night, Michelle Wie wouldn't say when she would turn pro despite attempts by Letterman to coax it out of her.
"You're just a kid. You're 15 years old and like a world-class golfer, not a professional yet, but soon I would guess," Letterman said.
"Yeah," Wie said.
Letterman also ribbed Wie, who turns 16 Oct. 11, about her goal of playing in the Masters, and about being too young to drive to the course.
"Actually I have my permit," Wie said. "So I actually did drive to the golf course, but not by myself."
